Testing FAQs

Will My Insurance Cover the Cost of the Test? What If I Don’t Have Insurance?

You will be required to provide us with your insurance status. If you are insured, you must have a copy of your insurance card and a government-issued photo ID. If you are uninsured OR if you do not have a government-issued ID, you must attest that you are NOT covered by ANY health insurance OR that you do not have a government-issued photo ID.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR INSURANCE STATUS, OR YOUR INSURANCE TYPE, YOU WILL NOT INCUR ANY OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSE FOR YOUR VISIT OR FOR THE TEST. PLEASE NOTE, HOWEVER, THAT YOU MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME, OR ALL, OF THE COST FOR TESTING IF YOU ATTEMPT TO TEST MULTIPLE TIMES.

Will I Be Required to See a Doctor?

You will have a short visit with a nurse practitioner or medical doctor to discuss any symptoms you may be experiencing, any exposure you may have had and any other reason for testing. In addition, a medical assistant will record your temperature using an infrared thermometer and will also take heart rate and oxygen readings using a pulse oximeter. Additional evaluation may occur, depending on your health status.

A qualified medical assistant will then provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to effectively perform a nasopharyngeal swab. A small swab must be inserted into your nose for a few seconds in order to secure the needed sample. In partnership with LabCorp, DC Pulmonary Medicine will order a molecular-based RT-PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test on your nasopharyngeal swab. You can expect your results in 2-3 business days.

How Long Will My Visit Take?

Your visit may take more than one hour. Please allow for at least an hour for your visit, although wait times will vary based on traffic volume.

How Do I Access Test Results?

You can access your test results by accessing the LabCorp Web Portal here. You will receive instructions on how to access your test results from the LabCorp Web Portal in the discharge instructions you will receive at the testing site. The discharge paperwork also provides instructions on next steps if your test is positive or negative.

Interpreting your LabCorp test results can be confusing. Please note that, if your lab report informs you that your test results were “abnormal” and/or if your report states that the value is “detected,” then you have tested positive for the virus.
